David Duchovny goes for the full monty under his Highland dress

HUNKY David Duchovny joined the SEX-FILES this week ... thanks to the Daily Record.

When we heard the sci-fi star wanted to wear the kilt to a pal's wedding, we flew to Vancouver with the full Highland regalia - complete with bagpipes.

And the X Files star with tartan roots beamed: "This is a dream come true - and my wife thinks it's really sexy, too."

New Yorker David has wanted to wear the kilt ever since he saw his Scots mate Peter Morris wear it at a showbiz bash.

He said: "It's so cool to wear while everyone in tuxedos is sweating."

But he confessed that flings might never be the same between him and his new bride Tea Leoni.

For the sight of him in a kilt makes her go weak at the knees.

Sci-fi star David revealed: "Tea won't let me out of the house in a kilt - because she wants to keep me all to herself.

"She's very keen on Highland dress - she thinks it's really sexy."

Now, stunning Tea is worried her new hubby will steal the limelight at Peter's marriage to David's manager Melanie Greene ... when he goes the full monty underneath.

David confessed: "When I wear the kilt I won't put on any underwear. I'll do what you are supposed to and be a true Scotsman."

The superstar researched his own Scots roots to find out which tartan he could wear to the wedding this Saturday.

David, 36, said: "My mother is from Whitehills in Aberdeenshire and I still have relatives in Newton Mearns, Renfrewshire.

"It was through mum's Scottish connection that I made the Ancient Hunting McFarlane my choice of tartan for the wedding.

"Her father's family are called Miller and her mother's are Ritchies. So I looked through a book on tartans to discover which one I might be entitled to wear.

"The one closest to my family was a kind of orange plaid, but I didn't think I could pull that off. So I went for this one instead - and I think it looks great.

"I think my mother will be thrilled when she sees me, too."

But although he was a natural in the kilt, tackling the bagpipes proved to be too much for the star.

He laughed: "I wouldn't say that I had an innate talent for the bagpipes. But I might try again when I'm alone. I think pipe music is lovely and I would certainly like a lone piper's lament played at my funeral. It's a very moving sound."

David is proud to regard himself as an adopted Scot.

He said: "I hope the people of Scotland think of me as theirs.

"I am very proud of my Scottish blood. I'd say that the Scottish nature in my personality and character shows in my stubbornness and perseverance, my sense of humour, my hard working nature and a touch of moroseness.

"My mother identified very strongly with where she came from and made it a part of our lives.

"We had haggis, which I like, and porridge. My mother also made clootie dumplings which we'd have at Christmas and Thanksgiving with custard. Afterwards she'd fry the dumpling with sugar. My mother's dumplings are great."

The superstar last visited Scotland when he was just 10.

He recalled: "Most of my memories are of things like the weather changing several times in a day and the kindness of the people."

David added: "I've never visited the place where my mother was born, but when I visit Scotland again I'd like to go and see the places where she grew up."

He's determined to pass his Scottish heritage on to his children and admitted: "When we have kids, Tea and I might give them Scots names.

"We have spoken about names and decided that, if it sounds good we'll use it. So if we like the sound of a Scottish name, then that'll be it."

The star admitted his life had been transformed since meeting actress Tea - who can currently be seen with Alan Alda and Patricia Arquette in the big-screen offering Flirting With Danger.

He said: "All my life people had said I would know when it was right to settle down and marry.

"But I thought that was silly because that feeling was something I had never experienced ... but then it happened with Tea.

"Then it was completely obvious to me that we should marry."

HE added: "It isn't something you can understand until it happens to you.

"But there was no thinking involved. My heart told me that this was the right woman and the right time, that was all.

"There was no agonising over things. No weighing everything up. It was just right.

"And we had a private wedding because that was what we wanted. We didn't want any attention on our day."

David has no regrets about losing his status as Hollywood's most eligible bachelor. He said: "If the fans knew Tea they'd understand why I married her. And they'd say that I'm a smart person."

Those who've witnessed his remarkable rise to superstardom are in no doubt about that.

The global success of the X Files - in which David and Gillian Anderson are agents Mulder and Scully in pursuit of the paranormal - has made him a red-hot movie property.

But, after five years, David believes the series' little green men should go home - but not for good.

He explained: "I would prefer to stop doing the TV show and turn it into a film series like the Star Trek or James Bond movies. I think the X Files is a natural for that.

"If the people want to keep on watching Mulder and Scully, then that is the way I'd rather do it because it means working on the X Files every three or four years rather than all year, every year.

David was recently linked to the follow-up for Men In Black, but he said: "I'm flattered people think I can do such a role, but it isn't true."

He and Gillian have just finished the first X Files movie and David beamed: "The movie is bigger, louder and faster than the TV show.

"It also creates a nice culmination to what we have been doing on the TV series."

Next we'll see David playing a doctor who has messed up his life with drugs in Playing God.

He said: "It's a dark and tough, but I think it's also funny."

A bit like him in a kilt really ...
